Established in
1914, the PG Department of Botany, University of
Calcutta, is recognized for excellence in teaching and research
in major areas of Plant Sciences in general. The Department has
received funds from UGC (under
COSIST Programme in two phases- 1984, 1989) and DST (FIST, 2004) in addition to funds
received by faculty members individually or in groups from various
funding agencies in form of major research projects.
In 1972, the University Grants Commission selected the section
Cytogenetics of the Department under Special Assistance Programme. In 1979, in due recognition to its achievements,
the SAP Centre was
elevated by UGC to the
status of Centre of Advanced Study
in thrust area "Cell
and Chromosome Research" Presently the Centre
is under SAP/CAS-Phase V of UGC assistance (2004-2009)
in identified thrust area research.
The Department imparts postgraduate
M.Sc. degree in Botany (intake 50 per year), in
ten different specializations.
Students pursue Ph.D degree
in Botany and other interdisciplinary branches (Biochemistry,
Biotechnology, Agriculture, Genetics etc.) under faculty members
of the Department. Presently a number of sponsored research projects are being implemented
in the Department; in addition to DBT-COE/Programme
support on "Translational Research on Transgenic Rice"
(2006-2011).
